Call for new flooding control measures BY GRACE CABELL Flood-wary St Albans residents want new culverts. Edgeware Rd residents have asked the city council for the replacement of culverts at St Albans Creek on Hills Rd, Edgeware Rd and Champion St, in a bid to lessen flooding. Overflow in the area has damaged the culverts, causing a ‘damming effect’ and channelling of water, compromising the effectiveness of the culverts. The city council is considering repairing the damaged culverts, but some Edgeware Rd residents said more needed to be done.

One Edgeware Rd resident, Andrew Pengelly, said the damaged culverts not only need to be repaired, but also improved, to enable increased flow of water at flood times. The Land Drainage team will present the Dudley Creek Post Earthquake Remediation Report to the city council on Thursday, which would include discussing options for the culverts. Land drainage operations manager Sylvia Maclaren spoke to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board regarding the culvert on St Albans Creek.

But after a minute of climbing, the cargo doors were opened and the students were able to look down on Christchurch below, and visit the cockpit to see out the pilot’s office window. All the students who experi-

enced the flight were left in awe. Through the experience the students were also able to get up close to the US Air Force Globe Master, one of the largest planes in the world. They also had a special tour of

NZ IceFest in Cathedral Square, a guided tour of the International Antarctic Centre tourist attraction and a behind the scenes look at Antarctica New Zealand, the Government agency in charge of all New Zealand’s involvement with Antarctica.

Call for new flooding control measures • From page 1 Ms Maclaren informed the board the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) repairs would resume, after being put on hold while the Dudley Stream review was in progress. The board was reminded that SCIRT repairs were ‘like for like’ so it was unlikely that any changes to the current culverts would be instigated.

At the meeting, the board decided to consider regular maintenance for the culverts, considering the ‘whole of life cost’ of repair. Mr Pengelly has argued that when it floods, the size of the culverts meant the issue would only continue . “St Albans Creek is attributed to Dudley Creek. The culvert on the corner of Edgeware Rd and Champion St – that’s too small to cope with flooding. When it

floods it fills with silt. So why not just replace them both?” he said. Mr Pengelly said the creek was hidden from public view, so people did not realise the importance of it. “Because it goes through a lot of private properties, the only places you see St Albans creek is if you have a beer out the back in Merivale, or a walk through English park,” he said. New life for St Paul’s cemetery A story from the custodian of the St Paul’s cemetery, Julian Dent (also one of the cemetery tour guides). The Westenra Grave: On one side is Derrick Westenra, the great uncle of Hayley Westenra. Derrick received the Distinguished Flying Cross award and Bar, flying for the Bomber Command for most of World War 2. On the other side of the tombstone is a memorial of two sisters who died tragically on August 30, 1903. The girls were killed while viewing the Waimangu (Black Water) Geyser, 20km from Rotorua. Many people toured to see this phenomenal sight. The eruptions went up to 460 metres in height. The story goes that their mother was tired, so waited in the shelter while the girls went over to see the geyser. The girls, along with the tour guide and one other tourist where killed when the geyser suddenly exploded with a huge blast. A GRAVEYARD in Papanui has been restored with new life. It has taken two years of restoration, and eight years of information gathering, but the St Paul’s Anglican Church cemetery in Papanui has finally been completed. The restored Mountfort-design church was badly damaged in the earthquakes, forcing its closure. With the assistance of the Papanui RSA, the church community has taken major steps to re-erect

HISTORIC REVIVAL: St Paul’s tombstone project coordinator Janet Tillman, and St Paul’s custodian Julian Dent with the oldest tombstone on site belonging to the first Vicar of Papanui, Reverend George Dunnage who died in 1853. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN many of the fallen tombstones. The Papanui Heritage Group has also undertaken an eight-year project to clean and transcribe the faces of the stones to restore their legibility, and to provide historical information for residents. Papanui Heritage Group coordinator, Janet Tillman, said the church had at least two people coming in each week and asking for information about families and ancestors buried in the area. “What has happened is people have lost their families in Christchurch and now they’re hunting for them,” she said. However, finding this informa-

tion has now been made much easier. Elizabeth Aldous of St Paul’s Church, and Papanui Heritage Group members Christine Grant, Janet Tillman and Fay Wildbore, have completed an online database of all the information recorded on the tombstones in the church graveyard. The project information is now available through a site search of Papanui on http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/ or can be purchased through the group. “People would have to come to visit Christchurch and spend

YOUR DIAMOND RING SPECIALISTS

hours trawling through the information. The beauty now is how easy it is,” said Mrs Tillman. The collection was already in full swing before the earthquakes, with Reverend Amanda Neil managing to capture photographs of more than 75 tombstones only months before the earthquakes knocked them down. Mrs Tillman said the graveyard had a rich history. “It was one of the first graveyards in the area, so there weren’t only Anglicans buried there. Other nominations are there too, including Roman Catholics, which is quite unusual,” she said.

Mrs Tillman said there were also many famous names connected to the graveyard. “It’s just fascinating. Rewy Alley was a famous New Zealander who worked in China. He now has the Rewy Alley School in Riccarton named after him. His parents are buried there. And of course, Charles Upham, his parents are buried there too,” she said. The tombstones hold records of history from 1853 up to present day. “There are many families who have ancestors buried at St Paul’s cemetery who have not been able to access records about them, and this is a wonderful resource for family tree researchers too,” Mrs Tillman said. Papanui Heritage Group member, Murray Williams, said the cemetery was an area for quiet contemplation and remembrance but also for information about family backgrounds. “If you know or suspect that you may have some family connection with someone buried or commemorated at St Paul’s, you may have been inhibited by the problem of locating the tombstone in a cemetery that had been degraded by the earthquakes and compounded by the difficulty in reading the names and details on many of the older headstones,” he said. Members of the public wanting to take part in guided walk through the graveyard can do so this week as part of Heritage Week 2014, which runs from October 17 to 27.

Bar owner

Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly, owner of the former Ted’s Bar & Grill in Halswell which was destroyed by fire a year ago, will be boxing in the upcoming Fight for Christchurch 2014 against Winnie Bagoes owner Geoff Cavell to raise money for Cure Kids. Reporter Grace Cabell spoke with him about what has motivated him to fight and how he made the career switch from Pentecostal minister to publican . . . So Chris, I have seen a nickname around, ‘Father Ted’ – what’s the story behind this? Well, before I was a publican, I was a minister for 15 years, a Pentecostal minister. All my mates used to call me Father Chris, till one day I was having a beer with my mate down in Rakaia and someone called me Father Ted, and it has stuck ever since. How did you get into the restaurant game? Is Ted’s the only bar you’ve owned? Yeah, it is. I’ve been involved in the industry for about 15 years. I used to be the manager at The Fitz, Toast Bar at Sol Square, and then my last sort of gig before I bought Ted’s Bar and Grill was as the general manager at Aikmans. How long had you owned Ted’s Bar and Grill before the fire? Just about 12 months. So, you unfortunately lost the bar in a fire, right? Yeah. It was determined as spontaneous combustion, a freak accident. I was pretty gutted when I lost it. I bought out the receivers. We were losing money for the first six months. I refurbished it and put GAME ON: Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly has been putting in the hard yards to come out on about $600,000 into doing that. We were doing very, very well and had turned the top in the Fight for Christchurch 2014.

whole place around. Then the fire happened, just as we were coming into summer. The landlord was selling the land so I did look at buying it, but I just can’t. Do you live in Halswell? Yeah, I do at the moment. Have you always lived in Christchurch? Did you grow up here? I was brought up on the mean streets of Aranui. Yeah, I loved it. I went to Aranui High School. I started off at St James Primary School, then Chisnallwood Intermediate then Aranui High School. I see you have some pretty personal motivations for opting into the fight? Yep. I did it for my youngest daughter Courtney, who is 14 now. At the age of two, she was diagnosed with Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, which is basically a cardio jack of the heart. A normal child’s heartbeat turns at 110 beats per minute and hers was at 280. So she was at very high risk of going into cardiac arrest. At the age of five, she had her first heart surgery at Starship in Auckland. They weren’t able to fix the issue because if they did, she would have had a pacemaker.

prepares for battle We think her life would have been considerably reduced having that at such a young age. So a new procedure was developed and at seven years of age she had her second heart surgery and they fixed it. How does she feel about you stepping into the ring? She doesn’t want me to fight! But she’s excited about raising the funds for Cure Kids. It’s very dear to her own heart as well. So have you done much boxing before? When I was 13 I used to box out at a working men’s club but that was a long, long time ago! I’m guessing you’ve been training pretty hard, what have you had to do to prepare? Well, I’m doing six training sessions a week, as well as now I’ve started to do extra swimming and things like that for fitness. I do three personal training sessions and three two-and-a-half hour boxing circuits of sparring each week. How long have you been training? About two months now. So, Chris, are you nervous? Nope! Nah, look, I’m feeling more and more confident each day. My fitness has improved so much, it’s incredible. I was more than 120kg when I started this journey and I’m down to 108kg now. It’s great – I can actually see my toes now!

So do you have a game plan, or is that a secret? Survive! I just want to get out of the ring without Geoff having done too much damage to my pretty face. Once you step foot in that ring there is nowhere to hide. Neither one of us are going to take a step backwards. What do you think about your opponent, what are your chances? I don’t plan on losing. Yeah, I’ll beat him. Geoff ’s a good mate so it makes this whole challenge just that much different. So it’s a bit of a war then, is it? Geoff and I are calling it the battle of the century. Last week Geoff turned 51 and in November I turn 49. So there is a 100 years between us. So what’s your favourite meal? I shouldn’t say pizza, should I? No, my favourite meal would have to be lasagna. I’d like to say I make the best lasagna in the world, but ‘mumma’ at Venuti does. You really can’t beat her lasagna, it’s the best I’ve ever had. Do you have any other children? I’ve got three kids: my son Alex, who is 21, and I think he’s going to be the next New Zealand barista champion. He placed fifth at the nationals this year. Then there is Kimberley, who is 19, and she is doing a degree in medical imaging at CPIT, and then there

BATTLE OF THE CENTURY: Winnie Bagoes owner Geoff Cavell will go head-to-head against owner of Ted’s Bar and Grill, Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly in the Fight for Christchurch 2014. is Courtney, who is 14 and goes to Hillview Christian School. How do the kids feel about you fighting? Well, Courtney doesn’t want me to, Kimberley is a bit unsure but my son Alex, well, he just wants to see me get my head knocked off! Do you have anyone in your life that has really inspired you? Inspiration wise, probably for me it would be Nelson Mandela. I think his ability to succeed out of adversity, and no matter what pushed him down he stood up and succeeded. As the saying goes, what does not kill you makes you stronger, and the only time you ever fail is when you refuse to get up. Bit like you will be in the fight

then? Yeah! You won’t keep me down. So Chris, what’s the first thing you would do if you win? First thing I’m going do when I win (is) I am going to have a beer; I have not had a drink in four

weeks. No drinks for me until after the fight. Hopefully I’m going to have that beer with Geoff if he still loves me. Well good luck, Chris, and thanks for speaking with me today.

FIGHT FOR CHRISTCHURCH FACTS n The Fight for Christchurch will take place on Friday November 22, at Horncastle Arena. n One of the top-drawer clashes is expected to be the restaurant war between Geoff Cavell, owner of Winnie Bagoes, and Chris “Ted” Casserly, of Ted’s Bar & Grill. n The duo aims to raise $100,000 for Cure Kids and has raised more than $20,000 already.

n Other fights include Chillingworth Road executive chef and owner Darren Wright facing Ashley Newsome, of MediaWorks. n Other confirmed contenders include: Jono Huntley (Spark), Paul Frewen (Vodafone), Clive Wentworth (Elite Auto Groom), Jono Gallacher (Adgraphix), Lisa Mead (KPMG) and Lana McCarroll (Lane Neave). n Money is being raised for Cure Kids and Ronald McDonald House.

The event will be separated into two age groups to provide a fun and safe environment. It will be held this Friday at the Papanui Domain. The intermediate superherothemed party for 11-13 years runs from 7-9pm. The high school party for 14-18

year olds will be held in the cube from 9.30 to11.30pm. Tickets are $5 and are available at Papanui Youth Development centre, Northcity Papanui, Te Ora Hou Christchurch, Belfast Community Network or at the door. They can also be bought online at http://www.eventbrite.co.nz. Funding for this event has been provided through the Winter Chill project, sponsored by Fletchers building company, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority

Top placings for young surfers at nationals The Canterbury scholastic surf team had a successful campaign at the national championships in Taranaki, finishing third overall. In the individual competitions, Conor McLennan, of Christchurch Boys’ High School, won the under-14 boys division. Conor was new to the national surfing scene and a surprise winner after a solid display of surfing throughout the event. Harrison Whiteside, of Hagley Community College, is already recognised as one of New Zealand’s top young surfers and was runner- up in the under-18 boys division and unlucky not to win. He was leading for most of the final but was just pipped in the final minutes by Mt Maunganui’s

Jordan Griffin. Fritha Davis, of Cashmere High School, placed third in the under-14 girls. The team had several semifinalists too, with Max Marshall, Rory Edmonds, Jack Wilson and Moss Thomson all making it through in their divisions. Marshall scored one of the highest heat totals of the entire event in his quarter final, with 16.37 points of a possible 20.

An extensive retail selection

for all your automotive needs A s in most bustling cities, the fastest and freshest food to be found in Bangkok is right on the street. These bustling street cafés are world-famous for delicious yet inexpensive meals cooked right in front of their hungry customers. Tuk Tuk Thai Takeaway in Hei Hei is bringing the concept of Bangkok street food to the heart of Christchurch. Chef Joy learnt her trade in this busy, historic city, running her own street café catering for locals and tourists. Now she is bringing her mouth-watering recipes to her very own restaurant/takeaway in Christchurch. If you ask Joy what she likes about having her own shop, she will tell you she loves to cook for other people. “It makes me happy that other people like the food I cook, I like to see their smiles,” she will tell you. She is a foodie at heart. Her focus is on good quality food prepared with fresh ingredients, resulting in a menu full of favourites, such as curries and dishes cooked in the wok like pad thai, spicy drunken noodles and chilli and basil stir-fry. The quality of the ingredients shows through with the choice of succulent tiger prawns and crunchy chef-selected vegetables.

It has been 13 years since John Gale took over the Super Cheap Auto Spares shop in Sydenham, and in that time the store, now named Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares, has grown from strength to strength.

Murder and mystery at St Andrew’s Murder and mystery abound this week as students from St Andrew’s College perform in “Suspect – the Murder Mystery Musical”. The show premiered yesterday and runs until October 23. The entire musical was composed by year 13 student, Isaac Shatford. Isaac had been thinking about writing a musical for some time, when last year the night after NCEA exams finished, his

brother convinced him to do it. College rector Christine Leighton said it was a wonderful recognition of Isaac’s hard work and musical ability that he had been able to compose the music for the production. Isaac is the current leader of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra. Tickets are available online at www.stac.school.nz or from the college reception. ($25 for adults and $15 for students.)

SHOCK HORROR: The town is outraged at this death.

Student a jazz superstar The accolades keep coming for young musician Frances Daly. The year 12 Marian College student recently received the Best Original Composition award at the CPIT JazzQuest for her piece Defective Detective. The award was followed with further kudos at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival held in Blenheim, where Frances received the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band Adjudicator’s Choice trophy for her performance on piano for the school jazz band. Frances has been committed for many years to her musical craft, and will sit her grade eight piano exams later this year. Frances’ long-term goal is to make music her career, either in New Zealand or overseas.

Diminished hearing has a major impact on

H

quality of life

earing Technology is fully independent and locally owned since its inception 23 years ago, with clinics in Timaru, Christchurch, Auckland and Whangarei. The benefit of this is that they fit clients with hearing devices best for them, not best for the company. What differentiates Hearing Technology from other audiology clinics is the customerfocused service offered. Clients feel safe and supported through diagnosis to make an informed choice. “Our average clientele is 65 years plus. Their visit to the clinic may be their only visit all week,” says John Robertson. “We try and make it special.” Hearing Technology will even pick patients up if they are unable to drive themselves to the clinic, if they live close by. Hearing Technology utilises the latest wax removal technology. Microsuction is less invasive, removing wax by gentle suction as opposed to the traditional method of syringing out with water, which can be very risky. While Hearing Technology offer free hearing checks. They promote full diagnostic checks which are more in-depth, recommended by doctors and ear, nose and throat specialists. This investigates the entire hearing system all the way to the brain, to

determine where hearing loss has occurred and what the best treatment options are. Good funding is available in New Zealand for hearing aids. People with a history of occupational noise exposure can apply to ACC for funding. MOH subsidies of over $1000 are available for everyone else (if fitting both ears). Tinnitus is a traumatic condition for some people. An extremely specialised area most effectively treated by Auckland University in the north, and now Hearing Technology in the South since one of their audiologists extended their training at the University of Auckland clinic last year. Although there is no cure for tinnitus, there are extremely effective methods of managing the condition. The Shirley branch has extended opening hours to late night Tuesday and Saturday. Phone 0800 142 132. About three months ago I developed pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear and the background tinnitus, which I have had since I was 19, also grew significantly louder. This made me deeply depressed. The high pitched pulsatile tinnitus invaded every aspect of my day and intruded into my sleep. Life was hell. I’ve been using Neuromonics now for

French flavours in a new bakery and cafe A slice of Parisian-style, fresh-baked flavour has come to Woolston with the opening of Terra Viva Bake in early September.

T

his delightful bakery and café is located in the back section of the premises formerly occupied by Holy Smoke restaurant, a charming old brick building that provides the perfect setting for a food place with a French flair about it. Terra Viva Bake is the “little sister” of the popular Terra Viva Garden Centre café in

Wairakei Road, where talented baker Jeremy Jaeger spent six years before bringing his passion and skills to the new café. “I have always wanted to have a bakery,” Jeremy says, “and this is an ideal situation because there is plenty of space for baking. It was much more limited at Wairakei Rd.” The open-plan design allows customers to see Jeremy and his assistant baker Anna

Tempting: Delicious cakes and pastries make special treats.

Dedicated: Jeanine Lester, left, Vanessa Beall, Anna Black and Jeremy Jaeger of Terra Viva Bake display a selection of breads and pastries.

Black at work, while the delicious aromas wafting through the café will set tastebuds alight as customers fervently scan the baskets and cabinets to decide what tasty items they will choose. The selection is extensive. It includes a wide range of sourdough breads (made from a culture from France), 15 different slices, cakes, bricoches, croissants, muffins, bagels, cheesecakes, patisserie pastries, gourmet pies and deli items, such as quiche and filled rolls. Everything is handmade on the premises. Hot and cold drinks include herbal teas, supreme coffee, spritzers and juices. Customers can enjoy their selection in the café, which provides a quiet spot away from the bustle of Ferry Rd, or take items home. Front of house manager Jeanine Lester says people are often buying special treats to take away and enjoy at their leisure.

Crusty: Some of the wide selection of breads available at Terra Viva Bake.

The entrance to Terra Viva Bake is located in Catherine Street, with off-street parking available. It opens at 7am, Tuesday to Friday, so is the ideal spot to grab a croissant or pastry and coffee on the way to work. It closes at 3pm, Tuesday to Friday, and is open from 9am to 3pm on Saturday. Terra Viva Bake products are also available to wholesale customers, and enquiries are welcome. Phone 384 8188.

Improve quality of life

C

hromium is an essential trace mineral with some surprising health benefits and may have the ability to reduce some of the common health concerns as we age and increase lifespan. Chromium helps regulate blood sugar levels and keep them in the normal range. Chromium appears to improve the insulinresponsiveness of the body and enhance the effectiveness of insulin. Chromium deficiency may be an underlying cause or factor in diabetes. Chromium has been shown to reduce major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Men with the highest chromium levels were found to be 41 per cent less likely to experience a heart attack. Chromium helps stimulate muscle growth,

muscle strength and supports fat reduction. A controlled study has shown chromium picolinate to increase brain activity and activate specific regions of the brain improving learning, recall and memory. In another controlled study, laboratory rats that fed chromium picolinate increased their lifespan by 33 per cent. Some studies have shown chromium picolinate to be more beneficial than other types of chromium. It therefore appears that supplementation with chromium picolinate may be a highly beneficial way to improve our health and possibly even lifespan. Herbal cancer support

W

hile working as head nurse of Sisters of Providence Hospital in northern Ontario, Rene Caisse was told by a patient how she had cured herself of advanced breast cancer by using a herbal formula given to her by a very old Ojibway Indian medicine man. Rene noted the formula down. A short time later Rene heard her mother’s sister had cancer of the stomach and liver with a maximum of six months to live. Rene made up the herbal formula she had noted down and gave this to her aunt who fully recovered from the cancer and lived for another 21 years. Her aunt’s doctor was so impressed he asked Rene if she could use her herbal remedy with some of his hopeless cancer cases. She did, with some exceptional results reported.

In 1922 at age 33, Rene left the hospital and went to Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, where she began administering the herbal formula, she now called “Essiac TM” (her surname spelt backwards), to all who needed it. Most of her patients were referred by their physicians certifying they had terminal cancers. In many cases, her patients were at the end stage of cancer and many died, but generally they lived longer than predicted, with much less pain and other symptoms. Many however fully recovered with no reoccurrence of the cancer. After Rene Caisse died in 1978, her formula has become available again. Cancer is a serious condition. Natural herbal and nutrition therapy may be highly beneficial. Further information is available at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy. Phone 388 5757.

Chromium Essential for Good Health BLOOD SUGAR STABILISATION - BRAIN PERFORMANCE - CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that appears to be below optimum levels in most people, but researchers believe may be vitally important in maintaining good health. Chromium picolinate is highly absorbable as well as generally more beneficial than other types of chromium. Chromium Picolinate Supports: - Stabilised blood sugar levels helping prevent & control diabetes - Insulin responsiveness & activity - Good blood circulation, cholesterol & cardiovascular health (Has been shown to reduce major risk factors for cardiovascular disease.) - Brain performance, helps activate specific regions of the brain connected with learning, recall & memory - Lifespan, shown in a controlled rat study to dramatically increase lifespan by 33%

Volunteers Needed The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

V

olunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing. Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning. Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs. With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds. Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.” This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer. “We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.” If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

Heat a small amount of water in a saucepan until simmering, then remove from heat and sit the bowl of gelatine in the pan (without getting any of the water in the bowl) until the gelatine is completely liquid. Mix the liquid gelatine into the coconut mixture. Pour the coconut mixture into four small ramekins. Refrigerate overnight or until set. Scoop out passionfruit pulp and gently mix in a bowl until loose. Turn the coconut jelly out onto dessert plates and drizzle with

to the vegetables and pulse to combine. Place sauce in a small stainless steel bowl, then mix in hazelnuts, remaining olive oil and red wine vinegar. Season to taste with a little salt and pepper, and set aside. Bring a medium-sized pot of water to the boil over a high heat. Add beans and blanch for 40–50 seconds. Remove beans from pot, drain and place in a serving bowl. Roughly tear remaining toasted ciabatta and scatter over beans before topping with romesco sauce. Serve immediately.

f you weighed up the difference between Fair Dinkum brand sheds and others on the market, you would literally feel it. Fair Dinkum kitsets are 30 per cent heavier than many other brands, and that is because they are made from a thicker grade of steel, Christchurch franchise owner Brent Collins says. “Being thicker, the strength of the steel is greater, so the sheds are much stronger and more resistant to the elements,” Brent says. “For example, in the high winds of October 2013, which caused a lot of damage, not one of our sheds came down.” In fact, they carry an Australasian ShedSafe Accreditation, having passed independent analysis by an engineer with flying colours, and the main frame has a 50-year guarantee, he says. “They also easily meet the standards

of the New Zealand Building Code.” Another key advantage of Fair Dinkum sheds is that they are not sold in modular sizes, therefore restricting the options, but are computer designed and customised to suit specific size requirements. “All these advantages,” Brent says, “and we still manage to be highly competitive in the market.” Brent has a strong building industry background, having worked in the sector in England and New Zealand for the last 25 years, and therefore has a sound knowledge of building structure. He and his Fair Dinkum staff know their products inside out and can provide advice and information on what will best suit customers’ needs and budget. Their dedicated build team also has many years of industry experience and provide the

At the same time, the product can be applied to all manner of uses from farming to the industrial and residential sectors, he says. “This is aided by the endless types of designs that can be computer generated.” Fair Dinkum sheds are distributed by Durasteel, and since their inception, more than 180,000 Fair Dinkum sheds have been sold across Australia and New Zealand.

end user with what they consider to be the best finish on the market. Having purchased the Fair Dinkum franchise with his wife in 2010, Brent says many of his customers are people who have shifted away from urban Christchurch following the earthquakes. “People who moved out of red-zoned areas had a lot of choice about where to go and what to do, and a good percentage of them have gone into rural areas where they could afford a 10-acre block. In utilising their land, they need sheds, and some of them even convert a portion of their shed as housing until they build a new home.” However, Brent says a large part of his shed business comes from people that

Do you have a good garden plan? An attractive garden is a dream which requires proper planning and careful nurturing. To create a beautiful landscape around your dream home you need basic garden plans to begin with. These garden plans are generally provided by a professional garden planner or landscape designer. The garden plans can be of many types. You can plan for more than just beautifying your garden, your garden plans can also be made to decide the theme of the garden. Some of the popular garden plans are: •Garden for full sun •Garden for shade •Corner of grasses •Corner of shrubs •Corner of perennials •Island bed •Privacy garden •Fragrant garden •Vegetable garden Garden plans give an aesthetic dimension to the garden along with its basic theme. Colour schemes, quality and variety of plants, height of the plants, border and flooring are done to give the garden its uniqueness.

TRANQUIL: A gazebo in the garden is a great place to unwind. The colour scheme of the garden is created blending the different coloured and textured plants. The plants are also selected according to their height which creates the contour of the garden and the skyline of the garden. Garden plans also include the kind of plants to be used according to the theme chosen. It is very important that the garden plans are both beautiful and emotionally restorative. A garden can provide a visual, perfumed, sound and tactile, sensory experience. The garden design needs to complement the home and connect the interiors with the exter-

nal environment, making the most of the available usable areas. Master planners know that the selection of plants is of equal importance along with their strategic placement on the landscape. Garden plans also include the planning of the garden arborsor gazebo as well as entertaining areas and garden art and furniture. Modular design and a unique frame layout can make a simple garden gazebo. The garden gazebo is the perfect place to relax or to hold family dinners, and other special events. A gazebo in the garden plan ensures a favourite spot to unwind.

WATER FEATURE: If your garden includes a pond why not make an island for plants?

Grow the classic salad cucumber BY TOD PALENSKI

REFRESHING: Cucumber likes a warm, dry spot in the garden.

When I think about what makes a classic summer salad or sandwich, the telegraph cucumber is first to spring to mind. Subtly sweet, crisp, and refreshing. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, they’re also high in Vitamin C and super hydrating. If you want to pick yours straight from the garden this summer, rather than fight your way through the skin-tight plastic wrap that so often accompanies the store-bought variety, now’s the time to get planting. First, grab your telegraph cucumber seedlings. Look for a warm, sunny and dry spot in your garden. Dig in some compost or leftover potting mix to the soil, making sure it’s friable or breaks up in your hand. Then, plant your seedlings. The telegraph likes something to cling on to so, for best results, either place them near a trellis or similar frame, or use a simple stake. To encourage fruiting, I like to grow mine next to a bee-friendly plant like lavender. This encourages pollination and, subsequently, fruiting. If pollination continues to be a problem (by that I mean the flowers fall off but no fruit develops), touch the pollen on each plant with a paintbrush, which will spread the pollen from one flower to the next. I’ve also been told, though haven’t yet tried, you can do the same with an electric toothbrush minus the toothbrush head. Magic. Around 10 to 12 weeks after planting, you should have a plentiful bounty of cylindrical fruit to add a refreshing touch to your summer HEALTHY: Telegraph cucumbers are super hydrating. fare.

MOTORING

High spec Subaru Legacy SPECIFICATIONS

SUBARU LEGACY X: Added value for 2014.

SUBARU IN New Zealand has done well marketing what could be deemed a niche product. They would have done a lot better if the market hadn’t been swamped with pre-owned imports but like all manufacturers and distributors which market in this country they have had to adapt to the pressure of imports. Subaru has recently realigned its line-up to make the product more attractive against pre-owned. Put simply, Subaru has added value into a lot of their models; the price remains much the same but a lot of extra kit and technology has been included. The latest model made available for testing is the Legacy X, which is priced at $54,990 and sits towards the top of the Legacy line-up. Incidentally, the Legacy range starts at $44,990.

Price: Subaru Legacy X, $54,990. Dimensions: Length, 4735mm; width, 1821mm; height, 1506mm. Configuration: Four-cylinder longitudinal, four-wheel-drive, 2498cc, 123kW, 229Nm, CVT. Performance: 0-100km/h, 9.8sec.

The Legacy is the large, comfortable sedan for which we have become attached to as Kiwis. It has a compliant ride, the suspension will tackle bumps and ruts without in-cabin intrusion.

Subaru’s four-wheel-drive system is engineered to appropriate grip when most needed. The system also acts as a contributor to the Legacy’s handling prowess, it is very directional with

solid steering feel and strong feel of what the suspension is doing under load. Alongside the Legacy’s above average handling manners it gets an energetic flow of power from

its 2.5-litre, horizontally opposed engine. Power is channelled through a continuously variable automatic, it works very much like a traditional automatic but without the disadvantages. Especially so with fuel economy. Subaru rate the Legacy X with an eight-litre per 100km (35mpg) combined cycle claim, that correlates well with the 9.2l/100km (31mpg) figure during my time with the test car. Subaru like to market their four-wheel-drive system aggressively. The sporty BRZ aside, all Subarus sold here have fourwheel-drive, and that is many a reason why the Impreza, Legacy and Outback have been popular in the South Island, they appeal when the ski-field access road is reached.
